Sean
Strangwick's second season in charge kicked off at the Bruce Arena
Memorial Ground on Sunday against the experience and guile of Frimley
Town OB. The manager handed a league debut to Mark Fleckney as well as
a start to new signing Jim Mulholland who had spent the latter half of
last season on loan. New centre half Mikey played alongside Lee with
Bathy at left back and Richy Sargeant starting on the right hand side of
defence. Lindsday Strangwick also made a welcome return to the club,
having been signed on a free transfer from Bournemouth during the close
season. The bench consisted of Payno, Chuckie, GG, and Jerome, who was
back in the frame after serving a 6 month ban for midget abuse.
The early
stages of the first half were a touch scrappy with both teams struggling
to get their touch after a few months away from competitive games, Simon
in goal for the Wheatsheaf did well to claim a cross from the Frimley OB
strikers feet whilst the Wheatsheaf laboured to create chances that
their possession deserved. As the half wore on Chesty and Gav Taylor
really assumed control of the game with Steve Willetts proving a
fantastic outlet for their balls. Steve was unlucky that his tricky wing
play did not result in the goal it probably deserved. The closest the
Wheatsheaf came to scoring was a cross cum shot that Jim head which the
goalie did well to parry then claim. At the other end a superb save by
Simon prevented the Wheatsheaf going in a goal behind at the interval
when he tipped a fierce shot onto the bar.
At half
time Simon had to leave proceedings so Jim took the gloves and went in
goal, with GG slotting in at right midfield and Steve Willetts moving
upfront. The second half continued in a similar fashion to the first
half, but with Lindsday more heavily involved as the play was switched
more to the left flank. Again it was a half with very few chances, most
attacks from both teams petering out before the box, and a general lack
of shots for either keeper to deal with. Frimley Town OB did take the
lead however with 20 minutes to go, when a shot from the right flank
took a MASSIVE bobble (you can pay me later Jim) and managed to squirm
under Jims foot and into the net. The goal really took the wind from
the Wheatsheaf's sails, and heads dropped a little.
The only
real chance to note as the game wore on was a good effort from Chesty
from 45 yards when the goal keeper had scuffed a clearance, but the
keeper managed to recover in time to catch the well struck shot.
It was a
game that the Wheatsheaf dominated in terms of possession and will be
kicking themselves that they were unable to convert the dominance into
efforts on goal. The defence looked superb throughout the game and were
untroubled by an experienced team, but conceded a sucker punch at the
worst time possible.
